Merlin (Chamberlain).

The MT5580EVO and ProSeries models are our most-fitted residential units across Cranbourne. The strengths are the MyQ smart-home integration (Apple Home, Google, Alexa, IFTTT), the 5-year warranty and the parts availability - Chamberlain Australia stocks spares for units going back to the early 2000s. Steel-Line motors most often arrive as part of a whole-door package - new sectional plus their VertiBelt or VertiChain motor. Strengths: matched warranty (door and motor through the same manufacturer), genuinely quiet belt-drive variants, premium finish-quality. Weakness: stock-keeping is more centralised, so lead-times stretch to 10-14 days on Steel-Line-specific parts. We fit these mostly on full-door replacements rather than motor-only swaps.

• Under 8 years old, single component failed (capacitor, limit switch, drive gear): repair. $250-$500, same-day, 5-year future life still on the table.
• 8-12 years old, multiple symptoms: grey area. We’ll quote both ways - repair if it’s one component, swap if two or more, or if parts are no longer current production.
• 12+ years old, anything failing: swap. The drive train, board electronics and limit-switch micro-switches are all in the same wear band - fix one and the next will go in 6-18 months.
• Pre-2010 motor, no rolling-code remotes: swap regardless. Fixed-code remotes can be cloned with a $30 device off eBay - this is a genuine security exposure on a residential garage.
• Wanting smart-home integration: swap if the motor is over 8 years old. Retrofit smart-home modules exist but rarely give a clean experience compared to a native MyQ or Tilt-A-Door pairing.

When you compare quotes, the line items to check are: motor model and HP/Newton rating (1000N minimum on a double-car sectional, 600N on a single-car), rail type (chain vs belt), warranty length (5 years is standard on premium units; anything less is the builder-grade variant), number of remotes (two as standard; additional are $80-$160 each), keypad inclusion, smart-home commissioning (should be no extra charge), removal and disposal of the old motor, and force-calibration plus AS/NZS 60335.2.95 compliance testing on completion.

My motor is making a grinding noise - is that the drive gear?

Usually, yes. The main drive gear is a sacrificial plastic part specifically designed to fail before the steel worm gear does - cheaper part, easier replacement. On Merlin and Chamberlain motors this is a $80-$140 part, replaced in 45-60 minutes. On a sub-10-year-old motor, replacing the gear is the right call. On anything older, we usually recommend the full swap.

Can a new motor fit on my existing rail?

Often, yes - if you’re staying in-brand. We have to inspect the rail length, the trolley type, and the mounting brackets before confirming. About 60% of like-for-like brand swaps re-use the rail.
